Opening Night of Diasporic Collage: Puerto Rico and the Survival of a People
This Thursday, March 13, CENTRO will debut an exhibition celebrating Puerto Rican identities, diaspora, and survival in partnership with Carnegie Hall.
Congratulations to the Diaspora Solidarities Lab and CENTRO, the Center for Puerto Rican Studies at Hunter College, on the upcoming opening night of their new exhibition “Diasporic Collage: Puerto Rico and the Survival of a People.” The exhibition will be on view at the CENTRO Gallery at the Silberman School of Social Work from March 13 through September 2025.
This exhibition celebrates Puerto Rican identities on the archipelago and throughout its diasporas. It frames the Puerto Rican diaspora as a “collage” of intertwined histories shaped by colonialism, resistance, and survival. The exhibition explores collage as both an artistic practice and a metaphor for the resilience and complexity of Puerto Rican experiences.
“Diasporic Collage” is part of Carnegie Hall's Nuestros sonidos (Our Sounds) festival, which shines a light on the vibrant sounds, diverse traditions, and enormous influence of Latin culture in the US. From February through May 2025, Nuestros sonidos extends beyond the walls of Carnegie Hall to include more than 100 events hosted by over 50 cultural and academic partner organizations across New York City. Events presented range from concerts, exhibitions, workshops, and talks to dance, theater performances, film screenings, and more.
