Black Beyond Data: Dr. Chris Dancy
Join Dr. Dancy, the St. Francis Neighborhood Center, and us for the Black Beyond Data Reading Group on November 29.
The next Black Beyond Data Reading Group will be held on Friday, November 29th! These free, virtual, monthly meetings are focused on exploring ideas around community-based data analytics (CBDA), a collaborative approach to data that involves community members in the collection, management, and analysis of data in their communities
The aim of the Black Beyond Data Reading Group is to gather people (researchers, faculty, community activists) who have an interest in Black community-based data analytics to critically research and study social issues to initiate transformative change in Black communities.
This month's guest speaker will be Dr. Christopher L. Dancy!
At Penn State University, Dr. Dancy is the Harold and Inge Marcus Industrial and Manufacturing Career Development Associate Professor of Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering, of Computer Science and Engineering, and of African American Studies and director of THiCC Lab. Dr. Dancy is also an affiliate faculty in the Institute for Computational and Data Sciences and Center for Socially Responsible AI.
His interest and expertise lie at the intersections of human behavior, computational systems, and sociocultural structures. He uses theoretical perspectives from computational cognitive science and Black studies to ground his research at these intersections, more recently focusing on the racialization and antiblackness found in these intersections. To study the processes that mediate these interactions, Dr. Dancy uses computational cognitive modeling, human behavioral studies, and design and implementation considerations of computational (particularly “AI”) systems.
